Dead Zones by Aaron Hoffman

What are dead zones. Dead zones are areas where the sea floor has little to no dissolved oxygen. They are often found at mouths of large rivers, and are caused primarily
by fertilizers that are being carried in the runoff. Due to the lack of oxygen it kills and destroys many creatures and habitats. At the rate we are going dead zones are likely to increase by 50% by the end of the
century. Human activities have resulted in the near doubling of nitrogen and tripling of phosphorus flows to the environment when compared to natural values (The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment; WRI). Sources of nutrients in coastal waters include; lawn fertilizers, agricultural manure, sewage output and storm water. the number of dead zones worldwide over the past 60 years, went  from just 42 in 1950, to 405 in 2008. How can we stop dead zones? The main way is to keep the fertilizers on the land and out of coastal waters. C
onservationist and farmers are all on the same page. They all agree they need to get rid of dead zones and are working on an effective way to stop it.

  2. It is crazy how high the dead zones jumped up from 1950 to 2008. I do agree that we need to get rid of the dead zones and help the animals in need.

  3. Dead zones are a impact to us very much, I heard that it does kill many habitats and animals in the but i forgot the oxygen do decrease. Keeping fertilizer on land wold be the better option

  4. There should not be any dead zones. They are so destructive to our waters and the creatures that live in them. I’m glad that farmers are aware of what’s going on and are working with others to do something about it.

  5. Great post, it was very informative. I knew that dead zones have become and issue but I had no idea that it has gotten that bad and they humans have caused such an impact. It is good that we are trying to work on effective ways to stop it.
