Face masks have been around and used in the medical field for many years. But, until COVID-19 arrived most people never had the need for face masks to be easily accessible and used everyday. Face masks were not optional; they are/were mandatory to be in most places. Reusable masks help keep pollution down but they were seen as less hygienic because they were often used over and over and could carry bacteria until washed again. Disposable masks were easier to make sure they were clean and helped limit the spread by being able to be thrown away after use or when they became wet from droplets. But with the increased use of masks in general and especially disposable masks are leading to more pollution in flowing bodies of water. Masks are literally everywhere me personally I know I don’t go a day without seeing a mask in the trash or on the ground. Everyone was worried about COVID-19 and the result health wise but what has it done to our planet and can it be fixed. This isn’t just a US problem but a World problem. We all went through trying to survive COVID-19 and now we need to try and learn how our planet will survive the effects from us trying to survive.
