Then and now: Why deforestation is such a hot topic

By: BBC News

Summery and Response:

First off, deforestation is the removal of trees for lumber, firewood, clearing of land etc. Deforestation has been one of the most harmful things to the environment and loss of nature. The article goes on to say that climate change is definitely linked to the loss of tree cover on the planet. Then they go on about why trees and plants are so important to the environment. The article says the basically plants and trees have the ability to absorbed CO2. They say that about a third of our CO2 emissions are absorbed by plants and trees each year. So with less and less trees/plants on the earth the less and less CO2 will be absorbed, leaving even more CO2 in the atmosphere. This is pretty disturbing. I didn't realize that plants got rid of that much CO2. We need to stop deforestation and keep planting more trees and plants so that we can make an effect on climate change. We need to be planting more trees than we are killing. The article then goes on to talk about some certain places that are facing a lot of deforestation and some statistics along with them. Then they talk about some of the solutions, which obviously is planting more trees. But they talk about how long it takes for trees to mature. When trees mature that is when they can start getting rid of the CO2 in the air. Overall this was a great article and was very interesting.

  1. Deforestation should make sense to anyone that has a basic understanding of oxygen and that it is important to basic function. The importance of air quality is important and has been clearly linked to increased risks of breathing and respiratory problems as well as other health problems. Trees help clean our air and help the air quality by taking in CO2 and creating O2 that is released into our environment. This is a process that happens naturally and is very effective but I don't understand why humans felt the need to start destroying something that was proven to be so beneficial to not only themes but everything in our environment. Great article Carson.
