Coral Bleaching

Coral bleaching is when coral loses its vibrant color due to lack of an algae called zooxanthellae causing it to turn white. Zooxanthellae has a mutual and positive relationship with the coral reefs. But the coral can quickly expel this algae making it turn white and then eventually die. This can be caused when the water has a temperature change. Climate change is the leading cause for this, even a 2 degree temperature change can cause the coral to expel the algae. Once coral starts dying it is super hard for the reef to continue to reproduce and survive. The dying of coral reefs impacts wildlife greatly as it does human life as well. Wildlife relies on coral reefs for protection and shelter. Coral protects humans by absorbing the forces of waves and storm surges.

  1. I clicked onto this post because of your picture. I thought it looked cool and it got my attention. I felt a type of way when I started reading it and found out that this is a dying coral reef. It’s sad that as small of a disturbance as 2 degrees in the water can affect and kill this organism. Thank you for informing us about this tragedy and hopefully we can do something about it.

  2. I knew that coral was dying as that I have been to a beach that used to have a lot of fish in it due to the amount of coral however there is very few fish left on that beach due to the lack of coral. I didn't know that a very slight temperature change could hurt the coral. That is extremely sad.

  3. I like how this can go with my case which is water pollution and other people can see climate change is really happening. I feel like you gave good detail that climate change is the leading factor in this case too. What’s one thing we can do to help out to make sure they don’t keep dying?

  4. Your post is very interesting,I did not know that this can even happen when there is a small change in temperature, which is sad because there is global warming.

  5. This post is very interesting. I knew that coral reefs are dying but I didn't know that only a 2 degree change in the waters temperature can affect it so much. I also didn't know that the reefs not only protect the fish but also protect us from storm surges and and the force of the waves.
