Summery and Response:

At first this article talks about the recent flood that happened in western Europe. Approximately 200 people died and cities were left in ruins. This all happened after heavy rainfall, which led to rivers in Germany and Belgium to overflow and over take the cities. Article describes the event, "streets turned into torrential rivers, sweeping away vehicles and reducing houses to rubble. Stranded residents were airlifted from rooftops and rescued in boats after floodwaters inundated their homes." This obviously sounds awful. The article goes on to talk about this was an effect of climate change and that we should expect to see more harsh storms/floods like this one in the near future. “Climate change made these events more likely and also more intense,” said Sjoukje Philip. This is pretty scary to think about. We are going to experience more disasters that are going to be even more severe than ever. At the end they have a great quote talking about how we need to figure out how to adapt and how to live with these horrible disasters because they are coming. Along with this we need to do things that will help slow down climate change, but we need to be ready for the worst and figure out how to adapt to wants coming. Overall this was a very interesting article.

Comments

  1. These floods in Europe are devastating and I can agree with what you have written above. We need to learn how to adapt and help.

  2. In response to the article, Climate change is definitely real and getting worse been shown by the many natural disasters happening around the world. This event is a great example of the increasing severity of natural disasters/events. More and more people are dying from us not making the change to help the environment that we live in. The frequency and severity of the events have clearly been worsening since the environment has been on a decline. Taking climate change seriously helps my only our planet but also the hundreds of people's lives that could be helped or saved but preventing the events and helping improve the severity.
