Avocado Boom in Colombia

Avocado Boom in Colombia

Emma Pettigrew

In Sonson, Colombia, Riobardo Zapata was left subsisting during the best of crop seasons and dept during the worst. He was managing his money well by having to take out money from banks all of the time. Until seven years ago when there became a boom in avocados turning his family life of growing coffee to his family now growing avocados. This green fruit is now exported to the United States, Europe, and Asia.  Today, Colombia is the third-largest avocado exporter in the world and the biggest to Europe. Some places in the world have even hailed the avocado crop as a antidote to poverty. Long term, avocado is set to continue growing in Colombia, especially as the climate crisis is pushing weather conditions to new and  different extremes.
