Detrimental Dams

Dams have many positive aspects such as water security, energy supply, and provides extra protection from flooding. You would think that dams would be beneficial especially since the increase in climate change. But unfortunately they are doing quite the opposite. Although dams have been proven to be very beneficial their time and their efforts are slowing starting to decline. It was shown that freshwater fish and birds are greatly impacted by dams this is due to disruption in connectivity between rivers. These dams are releasing greenhouse gases, destroying carbon sinks in wetlands, depriving ecosystems of vital nutrients, and destroying habitats.

  1. I agree that dams have a lot of positive aspects, and never even considered the negatives that they would have. I could see how it would be detrimental to fish and birds, but is there any way for us to solve these issues? I feel as though it would be hard for us to solve due to the even more negative impacts that would occur f we were to remove these dams.

  2. Is there anything we can do to make the dams safer for the environment? How would we get the water that’s in the dams out safely?
